A chiunque chiedi come si chiamava la moneta dell'antica Roma ti rispondono il Sesterzio. Sarà vero?

Il sesterzio era una piccola moneta d'argento, coniata raramente. Il suo nome deriva da semis-tertius, che significa « metà del terzo » (cioè metà del terzo asse). La sua abbreviazione HS ha la medesima origine; inizialmente era IIS e deve essere interpretata così: II per due assied "S" per semis-tertius, poi le due I sono state deformate da II in H per divenire quindi HS.

Quattro sesterzi formavano un denario che era d'argento ed era la vera ossatura dell'economia romana.

Il valore iniziale del denario era di 10 assi ed aveva come frazioni il quinario (1/2 denario) e appunto il sesterzio (1/4 di denario).

Inoltre il sesterzio era anche usato come unità di conto standard, rappresentato nelle iscrizioni con il monogramma HS. Somme elevate erano registrate come sestertia milia, migliaia di sesterzi, con la parola milia spesso omessa e sottintesa.

Its name derives from semis-tertius, that means " halves the third (that is halves the third asse) " one. Four sesterzi formed a denario that was made out of silver and it was the true skeleton of the Roman economy. The initial value of the denario was of 10 assi and had as you divide the quinario (1/2 denari) and exactly the sesterzio (1/4 of denario).
