ROMA - La cosa più straordinaria è lo 'studiolo', intimo e prezioso, le pareti e la volta ricoperti da affreschi raffinati, con i decori a motivi architettonici, le figure delicate, l'equilibrio di colori che rimandano alla terra. Eccola la casa dove viveva Augusto prima di diventare imperatore. In tutto sono quattro ambienti (sebbene la domus fosse naturalmente più grande), tre al piano di sotto, dove si è ricostruito un ingresso con una grande rampa, una sala da pranzo (oecus) e un cubicolo, uno al piano di sopra, accessibile attraverso un terrazzo, il cosiddetto studiolo, perché gli studiosi ritengono ospitasse lo studio privato di Augusto. L'epoca deve essere quella tardo repubblicana, quando Augusto non era ancora imperatore. Anni più tardi, proprio per costruirsi una dimora più ricca, fu proprio lui a far seppellire questa casa, che forse proprio per questo si è conservata. Sono ambienti collegati tra loro e privi di finestre, che prendevano luce quindi solo dalla porta, con un affaccio allora su un grande giardino (oggi però sono chiusi da un muro d'epoca neroniana).

La vera apertura sarà l' 2 marzo 2008, con il pubblico che dovrà essere accompagnato a piccoli gruppi da personale specializzato della soprintendenza. Si pagherà anche un biglietto di 8 euro, che servirà però per entrare oltre che in tutta la zona dei Fori (ora libera) anche al Colosseo e al Palatino.
